Events:
After the 2000 Popasmoke Reunion in San Diego and the 2001 HMM 162 Reunion in Jacksonville, we received several complaints that there were too many events. We have tried through the years to cut down on events as much as possible so as to leave you as much time as possible to spend with your friends and visit either at the hooch or take off on an adventure by yourselves.
At the 2009 Reunion we are working on the following events. Let us know if you care to participate in some of the events listed below.
v Visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center. Sept 10 to Sept 12
v We are planning to have personalized tours of the Museum starting at 9:00 am on Friday September 11th for HMM 162.
v Dedication of Engraved Bricks honoring Colonel O.W. Curtis and Richard Slack Sept 11 at the National Museum.
v Shopping Tours if there is an interest (date and event not yet scheduled)
v Golf Outing Sept 11. Contact: Bill OÕBrien at thecoaling@comcast.net
v Visit The World Famous Globe and Laurel Restaurant Sept 10 to Sept 13 (A great place to get together in small groups for a few drinks, dinner and a visit). DonÕt forget to make a reservation for you and your friends.
v HMM 162 Squadron Reception and Buffet Dinner will be held on Saturday evening, September 12th, from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm on at the Quantico Officers Club in the dining room, lounge and the Waller room... We will have a cash bar and bartender for you convenience.
Small Get Togethers:
Through the years we have always tried to encourage people to break up in small groups and go out to lunch or dinner together. This is the reason that most of us come to these reunion, to spend quality time with our old friends and squadron mates. One place that has come highly recommended is the Globe and Laurel Restaurant. Below is the web site link. Check it out and make a reservation for your group of friends. The web address is:
http://theglobeandlaurel.com/index.html
Side Trips:
If you would like to break away from the museum or escape from the hotel or hooch, a nice escape would be visiting Occoquan, VA which is about a 10 mile drive from the hotel. The Town of Occoquan features a large number and variety of historic homes and businesses. Most have been in continuous use for over 100 years, and many for over 200. Several of these old buildings also feature local ghosts. Some of these ghosts have been authenticated by outside experts; others have been witnessed by residents and visitors to town.
This peaceful, riverfront community is the perfect tonic for a busy, metro-area lifestyle. Come and experience Occoquan's rich history and beauty. Shop and dine in over 100 businesses and restaurants. Check out their website: http://www.occoquan.com/
Thanks and Recognition: I would like to thank Tom Stigliano for taking on the responsibility of being the HMM 162 Reunion Coordinator. Thanks also to Tom and Bill OÕBrien for taking the time to make two trips to Quantico and check the location out and get all of the information we need to pull this reunion together. I would like to thank Don Collins again for all of his time and effort through the years in locating and verifying information of 240 out of 245 members of the HMM 162 64/65 squadron. I would also like to thank Dom Bosco for all of his time and effort in locating his squadron members and making them aware of the upcoming reunion.
